This spring, I had the chance to put the Men’s Summit Series Superior FUTURELIGHT™ Jacket to the test in various conditions. I was looking for a light rain jacket to add to my wardrobe and The North Face had exactly what I needed. I encountered every kind of weather during one of my trips to Canmore and Kananaskis: snow, high winds, sudden rain, and bursts of sunshine, a real stress test for any gear.
About The North Face
Since 1966, The North Face has been at the forefront of outdoor exploration, equipping adventurers with gear designed to perform in the world’s harshest environments. From Everest expeditions to weekend hikes, the brand has built a reputation on innovation, durability, and a deep respect for nature. One of their most advanced lines, the Summit Series, reflects their commitment to pushing limits and the Superior FUTURELIGHT™ Jacket is a standout example.
The jacket

The Superior FUTURELIGHT™ Jacket is a breathable-waterproof, seam-sealed FUTURELIGHT™ 3L shell. It has Non-PFC DWR finish for added water repellency and the body fabric is made with recycled nylon. This jacket has an adjustable hood with a cinch-cord. Also, a two-way, reverse-coil, water-resistant center front zip for easy ventilation and pack access. It has a secure-zip pocket at the hip that doubles as a stow pocket.
Testing
What struck me immediately was how lightweight yet protective this jacket is. It packs down easily in my backpack but performs like a full-featured hardshell. The weather in the Rockies is very unpredictable. When it turned quickly at higher altitude, I threw it on in seconds, and it kept me completely dry through hours of melting snow and freezing wind. The FUTURELIGHT™ membrane is genuinely impressive. It is fully waterproof but still breathable enough to wear while moving uphill or walking in town with a pack.
Another thing I really appreciated was the fit and freedom of movement. Unlike many shell jackets that feel stiff or restrictive, the Superior FUTURELIGHT™ moves naturally with your body. I was able to climb, scramble, and maneuver over rocky ridges without ever feeling constrained. The helmet-compatible hood, high collar, and thoughtful pocket placement all added to the functionality.
I found the Summit Series Superior FUTURELIGHT™ Jacket isn’t just another waterproof shell. It is way more than this. It’s a high-performance, mountain-tested piece of equipment that lives up to the promise. When I hike through unpredictable spring weather, it delivers the protection and comfort I need.
To conclude
I can confidently say it’s one of the best outdoor jackets I’ve ever owned. For anyone serious about mountaineering, alpine adventures, or just needing a reliable shell in extreme conditions, this jacket is a truly worthwhile investment.
