When Full Speed Ahead reached out to get my insights on the Vision Metron 45 SL TL Disc wheelset, I was immediately intrigued. After all, we’re talking about the very wheels that powered riders to victory at Unbound Gravel 2024 and clinched multiple stages of the Tour de France. That kind of versatility and performance pedigree made me want to put them through their paces across the wide spectrum of riding I do, from smooth tarmac to chunky gravel.
About Vision
Vision is a brand under the Full Speed Ahead umbrella that’s been refining high performance components for years, especially when it comes to aerodynamics and integrated solutions. Their products are designed not just to perform but to win, whether under WorldTour athletes or ambitious weekend warriors. Their attention to detail and commitment to pushing the limits of carbon technology is evident in everything they produce, and the Metron line is the perfect example of that dedication.
The Metron 45 SL TL disc
The Metron 45 SL TL Disc is a mid depth carbon wheelset designed with all around performance in mind. At 45mm deep and 21mm internal width, the rims are tubeless ready and optimized for aerodynamics without compromising crosswind handling. They’re built with Vision’s PRS (preload reduction system) hubs and feature ceramic bearings, flat bladed spokes, and a reliable two cross lacing pattern in the rear for added stiffness and durability. The complete wheelset weighs in at a competitive 1,510g, making it light enough for climbing yet aero enough to keep the speed high on the flats.
Testing
I mounted the Metron 45 SLs on both my road and gravel setups to see just how adaptable they truly are. On my gravel bike, I tested them with 700×50 WTB Resolute tires and 700×44 WTB Byway options, and on the road bike, I ran 700×32 WTB Exposure slicks. Impressively, they performed flawlessly across all setups. On chunky gravel, they felt composed and stable thanks to the generous internal width that supports high volume tires well. On pavement, the acceleration was crisp and the aerodynamics were noticeably effective in headwinds and fast descents. Despite their 45mm depth, they remained predictable and stable in moderate crosswinds, a welcome surprise for a wheelset in this category. The hubs rolled incredibly smoothly and stayed silent, and the wheelset’s lateral stiffness helped maintain line precision in corners.
In conclusion
The Vision Metron 45 SL TL Disc wheelset delivers exactly what you’d expect from a product with a proven track record at the highest levels of racing. Whether you’re chasing gravel adventure or road speed, these wheels strike a perfect balance between lightweight construction, aerodynamic performance, and versatility. It’s rare to find a wheelset that excels in both the Unbound and the Tour de France but Vision has managed to do just that.
