For years, I admired the Kånken’s design. I had the chance to visit two Fjällräven stores in the past, one located in Freeport, Maine, and the other in Boulder, Colorado. Each time, I was captivated by the incredible colorful selection of their famous Kånken bag. So, I was very excited to finally try out this famous model, but in a version that was even more practical for my needs! Here is my review of the Fjällräven Kånken and why the Outlong model is more suitable for me.
About Fjällräven
Fjällräven is a Swedish outdoor brand renowned for its durable gear, minimalist design, and deep commitment to sustainability. Founded in 1960 by Ake Nordin, the company gained global recognition with the iconic Kånken backpack. The Kånken quickly became a cultural icon in Scandinavia, first associated with children and outdoor exploration and later adopted by students, artists, and environmentalists. Today, Fjällräven maintains this heritage of functional simplicity, making it a point of honour to produce durable, high quality gear. The continued evolution of the Kanken, seen in models like the Outlong, shows the brand’s commitment to adapting its classic designs for the needs of the modern adventurer.
The Kånken Outlong

The Kånken Outlong is a thoughtful and practical evolution of the beloved Kånken silhouette, adding increased capacity and technical features for those who need more from their daypack. The Outlong is also practical for day hikes, or light travel. It retains the signature rectangular shape and iconic Vinylon F fabric while dramatically enhancing functionality. Here are some key features:
- 18 Litres capacity. Slightly more spacious version of the classic Kånken.
- Durable and water resistant due to the Vinylon F fabric, with a lining made from recycled polyamide, produced without PFAS.
- Large main compartment with full length zipper access, an internal sleeve with a padded base for a laptop, that also contains a removal seat pad. There is a classic front pocket, and finally, a handy zippered pocket in the base for dirty gear or shoes.
The testing
The genius of the Outlong lies in its successful blend of the classic aesthetic with genuinely practical, modern enhancements. The iconic rectangular shape is preserved, meaning it packs like a box and uses every centimetre of its 18 litres volume efficiently. I can comfortably load my 13 inch Surface (can space easily a 15 inch laptop for sure), a pouch for electronics or other needs, a light jacket, and still have room for a packed lunch.
The immediate standout feature for me is the side pockets. Unlike the tight, decorative pockets on the original, the Outlong’s large side pockets with elastic drawcords easily transport my thickest insulated water bottle on one side and my bottle of bear spray on the other side when needed. Alberta is well known for its large population of bears and other wildlife in its parks and forests. So, I feel safer knowing that I can easily access my bottle of bear spray when I go hiking. This is a simple change from the original model, that makes a world of difference to outdoorsy people.
The two part design truly makes this pack versatile. The addition of a separate zippered base compartment is a stroke of genius. It allows me to keep my sweaty clothes after an activity, my muddy trail shoes, or my wet jacket after a gentle rain, completely isolated from my laptop and clean stuff in the main compartment. This separation has made this bag one of my go-to.
To conclude
The Fjällräven Kånken Outlong is a masterful piece of evolution, proving that a heritage design can be updated without losing its soul. By addressing the functional limitations of the original (most notably with its generous side pockets, the revolutionary base compartment and the padded shoulder and chest straps) it transforms the Kånken from an urban accessory into a versatile everyday outdoor pack. It is durable, well organised, and exceptionally comfortable for its size. For anyone who loves the timeless style of the Kånken but requires the utility of a modern daypack for life’s longer adventures and more complex commutes, the Outlong is an investment that marries heritage with high-performance practicality.
