As part of my preparation for the Race Across Québec, I sat down with David Proulx, co-organizer of the event, to distill everything we’ve learned, experienced, and witnessed into a single list. What started as a casual conversation turned into something more structured: a set of 10 essential commandments, wisdom passed down not from a mountaintop, but from muddy trails, long nights, and hard-earned lessons.
Whether you’re lining up for your first ultra or refining your strategy for the next one, these commandments are meant to guide you through the chaos, beauty, and brutality that is the Race Across Québec.
1-Thou shalt not ride with cheap lights.
Darkness will come—prepare for it. Invest in reliable lighting that won’t leave you stranded at 3 a.m. in the woods.
2–Thou shalt not underestimate the race.
This is not a weekend group ride. Train for the cold, the rain, and the long hours. Respect the challenge.
3-Thy stomach is thy best friend.
Feed it well, and test everything in advance. Race day is no time for culinary experiments.
4-What thou shalt race with, thou shalt test.
From clothing to bags, tires to the entire bike—leave nothing untested. Race day should be about execution, not surprises.
5-When the lights go out, thou shalt not panic.
Whether it’s electronics or emotions, stay calm. You’ve got this.
6-Stopping is not failing.
Pause. Breathe. Refill. Recharge. Then roll on. Movement will come again.
7-Thou shalt know thy timing.
Minutes add up. Know your average speed, manage your stops, and befriend your watch.
8-Thou shalt know thy tools and thy wrench.
Basic mechanics are your lifeline. Know how to fix a flat, adjust a derailleur, and keep your rig rolling.
9-Thou shalt question every gram.
If you’re not sure you need it, you probably don’t. Choose wisely—your legs will thank you.
10-The only pressure that matters is found in the Messorem beer line.
Keep your tires in check, and don’t let stress ruin the ride. Finish strong, and then celebrate with a well-earned pint.
