When SRAM approached me to test their Apex AXS 12-speed groupset, it was the perfect match. I had never ridden an electronic drivetrain before, making me an ideal candidate to evaluate this entry-level wireless gravel offering from the perspective of someone used to mechanical systems. It was an opportunity to experience first-hand how far wireless technology has come—and how accessible it has become.
About Sram
SRAM has long been a major player in the world of cycling components, with a reputation built on innovation, simplicity, and performance. Their AXS ecosystem has redefined expectations around drivetrains, offering wireless shifting across road, MTB, and now gravel, all tied together with an intuitive app and impressive system integration.
The Apex AXS groupset
The Apex AXS groupset features a 1×12 setup with a wide-range cassette, wireless electronic shifting, and full integration with the AXS app. The ergonomics of the levers are well thought out, braking feels powerful and controlled, and shifting is quick and reliable. One standout feature in this build is the SRAM Apex crankset with an integrated single-sided power meter—an excellent addition for riders who want to track and train with power without the added cost and complexity often associated with power meters.
Testing
During testing, I rode the Apex AXS across a mix of terrain, from fast gravel flats to steep, sustained climbs. While the stock derailleur maxes out at a 44t cassette, I found myself needing a bit more range for the type of riding I do. Thankfully, the AXS ecosystem is designed to be modular and upgradable—I swapped the stock derailleur for a GX AXS unit paired with an 11-50t cassette, and the transition was seamless. The ability to upgrade within the same system is a huge advantage. That said, even out of the box, the shifting is impressively precise, the setup is intuitive via the app, and the entire system runs smoothly. Integration with the Hammerhead Karoo added another layer of convenience, allowing me to monitor battery life and drivetrain status in real-time.
In conclusion, the SRAM Apex AXS 12-speed groupset delivers an impressive wireless experience for gravel riders looking to step into the world of electronic shifting. With precise performance, user-friendly setup, seamless tech integration, and a power meter included right at the crankset, it’s a complete package that brings high-end functionality to a much more attainable level—made even better by its upgrade flexibility.
