When Blackburn reached out to Allday about testing the new Airtower Pro Digital, I was definitely interested. A floor pump isn’t necessarily the most exciting piece of cycling equipment to talk about, but it’s probably one of the tools I use the most. With several bikes, different tire sizes and different pressures depending on where I’m riding, having a good pump around is simply part of cycling. The new Airtower Pro Digital takes something extremely familiar and adds the accuracy and simplicity of a digital gauge.
About Blackburn
Blackburn is one of those brands that has been around cycling for a long time. The company has built its reputation around practical cycling accessories including pumps, bags, racks, lights, tools and other equipment designed to make life with a bike easier.
That’s also what I like about Blackburn products. They aren’t necessarily trying to reinvent cycling. Most of the time, they’re taking something cyclists already use and trying to make it better, simpler or more practical.
A floor pump is a perfect example. It’s something almost every cyclist owns, but when you ride regularly, the difference between a basic pump and a good one becomes pretty obvious.
The Airtower Pro Digital
The Airtower Pro Digital sits at the top of Blackburn’s current Airtower lineup, and as the name suggests, the big difference here is the addition of a digital pressure gauge.
At first, that might sound like a small upgrade. In practice, it makes a lot of sense.
Tire pressure has become increasingly important, especially with the popularity of larger-volume road and gravel tires. Gone are the days where everyone simply pumped their road tires to extremely high pressures and went riding. Today, a few PSI can make a noticeable difference in comfort, traction and how a bike feels.
That’s especially true for gravel. I regularly switch between bikes and tire sizes, and the pressure I use on a road setup can be completely different from what I want with a large-volume gravel tire. Having a clear digital reading makes dialing in those pressures considerably easier.
The other thing I immediately liked about the Airtower Pro Digital is that Blackburn hasn’t overcomplicated it. It’s still a floor pump. You connect it to the valve, inflate the tire, look at the pressure and you’re done. That simplicity matters.
Putting it to the Test
Testing a floor pump is obviously very different from testing a bike, helmet or GPS computer. There isn’t a big adventure attached to it. Instead, you use it again and again, and that’s exactly how I tested the Airtower Pro Digital.
It became the pump I reached for before heading out for rides. Road bikes, gravel bikes and larger tires all gave me opportunities to see how easy it was to set the pressure I wanted and get on with my ride.
The digital gauge quickly became the feature I appreciated the most. With a traditional analog gauge, you’re often looking down and trying to determine exactly where the needle is sitting. That’s perfectly fine when you just need approximately 60 or 70 PSI, but it becomes more important when you’re dealing with lower gravel pressures where a difference of only a few PSI can actually change how the bike feels.
With the Airtower Pro Digital, the information is simply easier to read. I don’t want preparing my bike for a ride to become a complicated process. I want to check the tires, set the pressure, grab the bike and go. That’s exactly what this pump allows me to do.
Especially useful for Gravel
Gravel riding has probably changed the way I think about tire pressure more than anything else.
With larger tires, lower pressures and constantly changing terrain, tire pressure becomes part of the setup of the bike rather than simply something you check to make sure the tire isn’t soft. Depending on the tire, conditions and type of ride, I might want to make small adjustments before leaving.
That’s where having a digital gauge directly on the pump becomes genuinely useful. Instead of inflating the tire and then checking it again with a separate digital pressure gauge, I can do everything with one tool.
It’s a small convenience, but it’s one I started appreciating very quickly. The same applies when working on multiple bikes. Once you know the pressures you like, getting each bike back to those numbers becomes incredibly straightforward.
A Tool That Just Works
One thing I always look for when testing workshop equipment is whether the product simply does its job without making things more complicated than they need to be. I don’t want to think about my floor pump or deal with unnecessary features. I just want something that makes preparing my bikes easier.
The Airtower Pro Digital does exactly that. The digital gauge adds useful technology to an extremely simple tool without changing what makes a floor pump convenient in the first place. Connect it to the valve, inflate the tire, check the pressure and you’re ready to ride.
It’s simple, accurate and easy to use, which is exactly what I want from a floor pump.
In conclusion
The Blackburn Airtower Pro Digital isn’t going to completely change the way you ride your bike. That’s not really the point. What it does is make one of the most common parts of preparing for a ride easier and more precise.
For someone riding one bike occasionally, a basic floor pump will probably always get the job done. But if you’re riding regularly, switching between bikes, experimenting with tire pressures or running larger gravel tires at lower pressures, having an accurate and easy-to-read digital gauge starts making a lot more sense.
For me, that’s where the Airtower Pro Digital fits. It’s easy to use, the digital display removes the guesswork from setting tire pressure and it has quickly become the pump I reach for when getting a bike ready.
Sometimes the products I appreciate the most aren’t the ones packed with endless features. They’re the ones that make something I already do all the time just a little bit easier.
