Running is not a sport that I practice on a regular basis. I like doing it occasionally, as it’s easy to do and requires little equipment. However, I do like to take on challenges and get out of my comfort zone. Last spring, I took part in a triathlon (sprint format) for the first time in my life. Throughout the winter, I had to follow a training program adapted to my needs: swimming, cycling and running. For the running part, I had the chance to test out a pair of the brand-new HOKA Mach 6 from the renowned Hoka brand. Have you ever tried HOKA shoes, or are you considering getting a pair of Mach 6? Here remain the points I have to make about this pair of shoes.
About Hoka
But first, let’s talk about Hoka. This brand is identified for its highly cushioned running shoes, and performance wears. Their shoes are renowned for their innovative technology, which focuses on providing maximum comfort and support while you are running.
- Meta-Rocker Geometry: This design promotes a smooth, natural stride by creating a rocking-chair effect.
- Active Foot Frame: This feature cradles the foot deeply within the midsole, providing stability and support without the need for heavy or rigid materials.
- ProFly™ Technology: This dual-density midsole technology combines a softer heel for cushioning and a firmer forefoot for propulsion.
- Vibram® Megagrip Outsole: Some HOKA models feature this high-performance rubber outsole, which offers excellent traction on various surfaces.
- Lightweight Materials: Despite their substantial cushioning, HOKA shoes are designed to be lightweight, reducing the overall weight on the runner’s feet.
These technologies work together to provide a unique running experience that prioritizes comfort, support, and efficiency.
Women’s Mach 6
The Hoka Mach 6 is a remarkable running shoe designed for performance and comfort. From the other Mach models, it features an upgraded midsole with a single layer of SCF EVA (Super-critically foamed EVA), providing a snappier ride and exceptional responsiveness. In addition, this is the lightest model in the Mach series for now. However, the rubber outsole provides excellent grip and durability.
I found this pair of shoes very breathable, due to the upper conception. The creel jacquard upper promotes optimal airflow, keeping the feet cool during runs. On the other hand, even if they are light and breathable, I found they provide a secure fit. The midfoot TPU overlay ensures a secure lockdown, while the gusseted tongue prevents irritation. I feel them very safe in my feet, I never need to tie them too tightly.
Even though I tend to run short distances (between 5 and 7 km), the HOKA Mach 6 is well-suited for long-distance running. Whether you’re training for a marathon or simply enjoy logging long runs, the Mach 6 provides comfort and support. They perform well on a variety of terrains, but it’s particularly suited for:
- Roads and Pavement: The Mach 6’s lightweight design and responsive midsole make it an excellent choice for road running. It provides a smooth ride and ample cushioning for pavement surfaces.
- Tracks and Treadmills: If you’re training on a track or using a treadmill, the Mach 6’s energy return and comfortable fit will serve you well.
- Light Trails: While not a dedicated trail shoe, the Mach 6 can handle light trails with packed dirt or gravel. Its traction and cushioning allows for a pleasant off-road experience.
The stack height of the HOKA Mach 6 is approximately 29 mm in the heel and 24 mm in the forefoot. This provides a balanced combination of cushioning and responsiveness for your runs! The drop (or heel-to-toe offset) of the Mach 6 is approximately 5 mm. This means the difference in height between the heel and forefoot is 5 mm, promoting a more natural and efficient running stride.
In conclusion
I thoroughly enjoyed testing these shoes, both in my training sequence and in my triathlon event. I have to admit I had a period of adaptation with regard to the height of the heel (the drop). Used to having lower soles, my running posture had to adjust. However, by far, I’ve found these to be the shoes that give me the most support and comfort when running. In addition to being ultra-comfortable, the design of the Hoka shoes is so beautiful. They come in a multitude of vibrant colors and original combinations. They know how to stand out from the crowd!
