Finding the right tire for the Race Across Quebec was a key step in my preparation. I needed something that would roll fast on pavement but still offer enough comfort and grip for light gravel sections. After testing a few options, the WTB Expanse in 700×32 quickly rose to the top of the list.
About WTB
WTB is a brand known for making components that meet the demands of riders who push boundaries. Whether it’s gravel, trail, or mixed-surface road riding, WTB consistently delivers products that balance durability, performance, and smart design. Their tires, in particular, have earned a strong reputation for real-world reliability.
The Expanse tire
The Expanse is a slick tire at heart, built for distance and speed but with a design that doesn’t back down when the pavement ends. It features a fast-rolling center and subtle tread along the edges to give a bit of grip when cornering on looser surfaces. At 32 mm wide, it offers more volume and comfort than a standard road tire, without adding excess weight or sluggishness. Its tubeless-ready casing allows for lower pressures and added suppleness, making it an ideal tire for riders who like to mix in rougher roads without switching to a full gravel setup.
Testing
I rode over 2500 km on the Expanse, covering everything from long asphalt stretches to chipseal, packed dirt, and even some rougher gravel where the route forced a bit of improvisation. On pavement, the tire felt efficient and responsive. It held its speed easily and soaked up road buzz better than expected. On light gravel and hardpack, it stayed composed and handled predictably. Even when conditions got a bit chunkier, the Expanse never felt out of its element. It’s clearly not made for deep gravel or mud, but it holds its own when the road changes unexpectedly.
In conclusion
The WTB Expanse 700×32 is a strong choice for endurance riders and event participants who spend most of their time on tarmac but want the flexibility to take detours or shortcuts on mixed surfaces. It brings confidence, speed, and comfort together in one well-rounded package. For races like the Race Across Quebec, it hits the mark exactly where it matters.
